About the role
The LGA provides a range of different services to support our members with their communications - including comms reviews, best practice resources, events, crisis comms support and much more.
We are recruiting a Communications Improvement Adviser to help coordinate and deliver this support to communications teams and senior leaders in local government.
This is an exciting and challenging time for the sector, and you will play an important role in helping our members communicate and engage with their residents. Your main duties will include:
Creating best practice resources for local government communicators, chief executives and leaders
Coordinating and managing reviews of council communications functions and activities
Devising and organising best practice events and seminars
Providing expert advice and counsel to our member authorities
Working with colleagues to champion best practice and fresh thinking in public service communications
About you
Our ideal candidate will be a communications professional with a strong understanding of issues facing local government, excellent personal skills and a positive, flexible and adaptable approach. You will need experience of working in a political environment, and with a wide range of different internal and external stakeholders.
As a trusted adviser working with senior colleagues in local government on a daily basis, you will have excellent people skills and the ability to juggle complex and varied tasks. The successful applicant will work closely with colleagues across the LGA to ensure we provide our member authorities with the support they need.
The position is for a fixed term period of six months and is open to colleagues from local authorities to join us on a secondment basis, as well as to all other backgrounds.
You must have the right to work in the UK, the LGA are unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship visas. Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.

We are specifically assessing candidates against the following criteria:
Experience of working in a communications and/or a political environment
A good understanding of issues facing local government communicators
Knowledge of public sector communications and wider communications best practice
Political nous, awareness and sensitivity to ensure credibility with politicians, managers and key stakeholders
A track record of delivering successful communications activity
Excellent written skills, with the ability to accurately summarise and convey complex information

Our benefits
LGA annual leave entitlement is 29 days, rising to 31 days after three years’ service and to 33 days after five years’ service, plus all UK public holidays (pro rata for fixed term and part time contracts).
Flexible & agile working – office-based staff are required to work in the LGA’s London office two days per week as a minimum, subject to business need and this may vary significantly between different roles and from week to week.
